Love of Kennett Square Community Makes Concert Series a Success

Enthusiasm abounds for the 2013 Anson B. Nixon Summer Concert Series. The source of the excitement seems to be the small-town vibrancy that permeates the Kennett Square community. When asked how the 2013 Concert Series was going so far, committee member and organizer of the series Ginna Goodall exclaims, “This summer’s response to the park has been outstanding—we’ve seen bigger crowds each week than ever before.”

Ginna goes on to proclaim that “The eclectic music schedule seems to have something to keep everyone happy, but I believe most people come out regularly on Wednesday evenings just because, not due to a certain genre of music or band (although there are always a number of groupies who follow particular groups). Instead people just love the setting, the small town community feeling of the concerts in the park, and it’s a great gathering place where you are confident you’ll have a good time and meet up with people you know. Not to mention finding a good meal from one of the many local restaurants who participate throughout the summer. La Verona will be with us this week!”

With five shows still left in the concert series there is still plenty of opportunity to experience the magic of these family (and leashed dog) friendly nights of free music. Bring a picnic or purchase food from the featured Kennett area restaurant of the week. Shows begin promptly at 7 p.m., with plenty of time to also enjoy a visit from the La Michoacana ice cream cart. A love of Kennett Square is a sentiment also shared by the musicians performing during the 2013 Summer Concert Series. This Wednesday local favorites Mason Porter will be returning to the park stage. Tim Celfo, a member of this band known for its popular rootsy Americana original songwriting, explains that “Kennett Square has become a second home to Mason Porter. The people in the greater Kennett community have always been so supportive, interesting and fun. Between the farmers’ market, the Kennett Flash and the local watering holes, we have developed some great friendships that will last forever.”

“The Free Concert series in Anson B. Nixon Park is one of many examples of how the Kennett community comes together,” Celfo says. “So many special characters come out of the woodwork to dance the night away. We are excited to play for our old friends and make some new friends on Wednesday. We’re also very excited to sample the cuisine from downtown Kennett’s own La Verona, who will be serving up something special.”

the spinto band

The final band of the concert series is the popular indie rock group The Spinto Band. Although they claim Delaware as their home state, they have plenty of ties to Kennett Square. Singer and bassist of the band, Thomas Hughes, states that, “We have a close connection with Kennett Square. One of our first shows we ever played was one we put on ourselves at the VFW American Legion right in Kennett Square. We rented out the place and brought in video games for people to play and held dance contests and had juggling acts in addition to bands. I suppose we didn’t know what we were doing, but it sounded like a good idea at the time! We wanted to take part in the concert series because Kennett Square is a neat little place and it’ll be a good excuse to partake in some corn ice cream from La Michoacana!”
