Our Recommendation: Sly Fox Brewing Company’s JB Coffee Porter

Where: Sly Fox Brewery and Tastin’ Room, 331 Circle of Progress Drive, Pottstown, PA

Do you like some beer with your coffee?

We made the trek up to Pottstown over the weekend to check out Sly Fox Brewery and Tastin’ Room, which opened last summer. It’s a simple bar and restaurant. The brewery is hidden back in a corporate park a few miles off of Route 100 and a short distance north of Route 422. Inside is pretty basic — a long bar with a pizza oven and the kitchen to the right. To the left are picnic tables and large windows that provide a glimpse into the brewery.

After taking a few sips of my Royal Weisse, I realized I had missed a handwritten addition to the chalkboard — JB Coffee Porter. I promptly told my date we would need to hang out for a second round.

JB Coffee Porter is nearly black in color with a small mocha head. Before taking a sip, I could smell the aroma of fresh coffee. The first sip was truly balanced rich coffee taste with flourishes of chocolate at the end. The porter was carbonated, but still slightly creamy and I was thrilled there was none of that coffee bitterness. If you want subtle notes of coffee in your porter, you may find this overpowering, but avid coffee drinkers should be pleased.

I asked the barista/bartender about the origin of this delicious beer. He explained JB stands for Johnny Brenda’s, the famous bar, restaurant and music venue located Philadelphia’s Fishtown section. Johnny Brenda’s roasts their own fair trade coffee beans from the Atenas Co-op in Ateneo, Costa Rica and collaborated with Sly fox on the making of this fine brew.
