Bars and restaurants from Philadelphia and Boston are getting in on the friendly yet competitive game-day banter by placing fun wagers with one another based on who takes home the win this Sunday. From restaurants to breweries, owners of these establishments are showing their city pride by making sure that their colleagues from the other city know exactly what’s at stake on Sunday, February 4!

P.J. Whelihan’s founder, Bob Platzer, has a bet going with Boston-based Nick Varano of STRIP by Strega for Sunday’s Super Bowl game. Whichever team wins, that restaurant/owner from the winning city will get to enjoy a feast of local fare from the losing city, and the losing CEO will don the winning team’s jersey on Monday.
Platzer’s so fired up, he’s been in Boston talking to local media – or should we say “trash-talking” – in preparation for what he believes is going to be a win for the Eagles and a win for P.J. Whelihan’s.
Varano recently released a video with David Ortiz, the one guy from Boston who everyone knows (aside from Mark Wahlberg who, might we add, played a Philadelphia Eagle in Invincible), talking about the Philly-versus-Boston restaurateur bet.
Both owners are no doubt eager to see their respective team win, but you’ll guess which team we, at PA Eats, are rooting for to bring home a win!
Yards Brewing Company vs. Harpoon Brewery
PA Eats recently highlighted this head-to-head game-day battle between Yards Brewing Company and Harpoon Brewery, but it’s too good not to mention again! The brewery staff of the losing team will have to pour beer at the winning brewery’s location all day long, and they’ll be wearing sports gear with the winning team’s logo on it.
There is also a philanthropic aspect to this competition: Yards will donate $1 from each pint of Philly Pale Ale sold in the taproom from Wednesday, January 24 through Sunday, February 4 to Prevention Point, and they will also donate $10 from each keg of Philly Pale Ale sold anywhere in the Philadelphia region during that same timeframe. Harpoon will also be adding a philanthropic twist and giving back in their community.
Dottie’s Donuts vs. Kane’s Donuts

Even donut vendors are getting in on the competitive aspect between these two cities as Dottie’s Donuts, home of the now-famous Greased Pole donut in Philadelphia, and Kane’s Donuts of Saugus and Boston, Massachusetts, have their own wager currently in motion. The donut shop from the city of the losing team has to send a dozen donuts to the shop whose team won.
PA Eats embraces this friendly competition going on between these establishments, though you know who we’re rooting for! (Go, Eagles!!!)
