Newton’s On State To Close Their Doors

Newton’s on State Street, a Kennett Square restaurant and bar that features live music and outdoor dining, announced they are shutting their doors after nearly eight years of business.

The Newton family made the announcement with a Facebook post this past Saturday. They wrote.

To Our Very Valued Customers and Friends;

We wanted to let you know that Newton’s On State Street will be closing its doors on September 25, 2011.

In the heartfelt note, signed by Tim, Lisa, Sherry and Tony, they thanked their employees, customers and the Kennett Square community. They encouraged everyone to stop by this week for one last meal or drink.

To name all of our true friends that we have had the genuine honor and pleasure to get to know and love would take up too much space and I don’t want to miss anyone. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, Thank you for your support, patronage and love, we love you back! Historic Kennett Square and the Borough of Kennett Square, you have always done your best to make Newton’s a part of everything going on in town. We will miss the community as a whole.

In a Monday afternoon phone call, Tim Newton explained the dinner business was hardest hit. “Folks aren’t going out to dinner due to the economy,” he said. He noted the business lunch had dropped also during recent months.

Customers reacted sadly to the news:

Doug Clark plays in the band A Few Locals. They had just performed at Newton’s on Friday night. “It’s terribly sad,” Clark said. “It was our first time playing there, but we hung out there all the time. We’d go on Monday nights to play poker. Anytime we’d go out in Kennett Square, it seemed like we ended up there. I’m going to miss the pretzel encrusted cheeseburger bites,” Clark said. “That will be a giant void in my life.”

Kate Wagner was surprised when she heard the news. “I didn’t know that they were closing. Newton’s was the place that Kennett Square went to eat. The restaurant was great to eat at!” she said.

On Newton on State’s Facebook wall, customers posted their thoughts.

Adela Clayton wrote, “Kennett will never be the same without you guys.”

Lisa Hoosier teased, “Just a warning… I’m stealing poker chips on Thursday,” and suggested that Mr. Newton should finally play a round in the last game, which will be Thursday at 7pm.

Newton’s On State will also have Tony’s Final Trivia this Tuesday at 7:30pm.  Live Music on Friday will feature Rick Vickery and Saturday, the 24th will be Karaoke with Brad Tatman. Sunday, the 25th, the doors will close for good.
