On Juneteenth, communities across the country come together to honor and celebrate Black heritage. The occasion is marked by jubilees, festivals, block parties, picnics and parades of all sizes. Juneteenth commemorates the 1865 enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, where Union Major General Granger and 2,000 federal troops reinforced the freedom of all enslaved people.
