New Restaurant Report: Week of Sept. 8–14

Do you have restaurant news from your community to share? Hit us up!

As the fall ramps up, so do the restaurant openings! Here’s what’s new and fresh in your community’s culinary scene this week:

Chadds Ford/Kennett Square

A project many months in the making, Chadds Cafe is slated to open on Saturday, September 15, in the historic Chadds Ford Barn Shops Village. Bri Brant, of arden + james, is part of the ownership family of Chadds Cafe, and she has worked tirelessly with her partners to create a welcoming space designed for the community. The cafe menu features coffee from Brandywine Coffee Roasters and light bites. Read more about the project here, and stop by this weekend to celebrate the grand opening! 1609 Baltimore Pike, Suite 500, Chadds Ford.

Iron Hill Brewery, which has pretty much colonized the Philly ‘burbs over the past decade, has finally made its mark in the city proper. Its Center City brew pub, in the East Market development, celebrated a soft opening on Thursday, September 13. Going forward, it will be open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to midnight, Saturdays from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The food offerings echo the menus at the other locations, and happy hour is every weekday from 4–6 p.m. 1150 Market St., Philadelphia; (267) 507-7365.

A new modern Filipino restaurant, Sarvida, opened last week in the former Girard space in Fishtown. We reported this change last April and we’re glad to see the project come to fruition! The BYO’s menu will change frequently, but this month includes delicious options like Tortang Talong (soft-scrambled egg, eggplant purée, local tomatoes and salted egg), Binagoongan (pork belly, cauliflower and shrimp paste) and Escabeche (a whole fried bronzino with ginger, long hots, and sugar cane vinegar). Weekend brunch is coming soon. 300 E. Girard Ave., Philadelphia.

Vientiane Cafe, a longtime West Philly favorite for authentic Thai and Lao cuisine, opened a second location in Kensington, right under the El, called Vientiane Bistro. The small BYO, which began service on Thursday, September 13, offers a menu similar to its Cedar Park sister, including coconut soup, summer rolls, satay, papaya salad, as well as all sorts of saucy and curried entrees, noodles and rice, specialty Lao dishes and more. 2537 Kensington Ave., Philadelphia; (267) 703-8199.

Phoenixville

The Phoenixville area’s already-booming brewery scene gets a new addition this week: Bald Birds Brewing Co.! We introduced you to husband and wife owners Abby and Joe Feerrar last February, when we announced their brewery concept. Now, after much hard work, they will celebrate a grand opening on Saturday, September 15, with beer flowing from the taps from noon ’til midnight, as well as food, live music, raffles, giveaways, and special appearances by special winged guests from the John James Audubon Center. 970 Rittenhouse Rd., Suite 400, Audubon; (484)  392-7068.

While we haven’t heard of an opening date, we did get the exciting news that Old Forge Brewing Co. has officially received the permit to begin renovations on the space in downtown York at Market and Beaver (the former Isaac’s on the Fly). They’re pushing to open by Thanksgiving. As far as the menu goes, expect something similar to Old Forge’s Danville location, with 16 drafts plus one cask beer, with 4-packs and 6-packs of cans to-go. Stay tuned for more! 78-98 W Market St., York.
